Some of my favorite memories along the shore are not of sunsets or perfect reflections, but of small, sandy triumphs-tunnels that almost collapse, castles that lean, and children who end up dusted head to toe in beach sand. "Playing at the Lake" is my tribute to those sun-warmed afternoons.
On this 16x20 acrylic canvas, I used my palette knife to sculpt the sand itself, building ridges, scoops, and tiny mounds into a textured foreground you can almost feel under your fingertips. The children are caught mid-mischief-half treasure hunters, half architects, as inclined to bury themselves as to build. Their gestures are loose and lively, with just enough detail to suggest bare feet, bent knees, and the unselfconscious focus of play.
Beyond them, the lake glows with soft, impressionistic color, a calm counterpoint to the busy hands at the water's edge. The horizon is kept simple, so the eye returns again and again to the small dramas unfolding in the sand: the shared bucket, the half-finished moat, the quiet companionship of childhood.
