Springtime Iris

Springtime Iris

$350.00
Springtime Iris began the way many of my floral pieces do: with a single bloom catching the light just right. I wanted to capture that brief, electric moment when winter finally loosens its grip and color returns to the garden. Instead of placing the iris in a traditional soft setting, I laid in a deep black ground, knowing every palette knife stroke would flare to life against it.

On this 16x20 canvas, the iris rises out of the darkness in thick, sculpted acrylic. I used the edge of my palette knife to carve sharp highlights along each petal, then pressed broader swaths of paint to suggest the delicate ruffles and folds. The contrast between the luminous petals and the dark background pulls the eye in from across the room, giving the flower a spotlight effect that feels almost theatrical.

Up close, the surface is alive with ridges and valleys of paint. Light catches on those raised textures throughout the day, changing the mood slightly with each shift in brightness. In the evening, the black backdrop recedes even further, making the colors appear richer and more intimate.

This piece works beautifully as a focal point in an entryway, bedroom, or quiet reading corner, especially in spaces that need a single, confident accent of nature rather than a busy arrangement. For collectors and first-time buyers alike, Springtime Iris offers a way to bring the energy of early spring indoors all year long, in a format that feels both modern and rooted in classical floral observation.

If you are drawn to bold contrasts, textured acrylic, and florals that feel almost sculpted from paint, this 16x20 iris can become that one piece guests pause in front of, seeing something slightly different every time they walk by.
