Deer Family in the Woods

"Deer Family in the Woods" began with an ordinary walk that turned suddenly sacred. I rounded a bend beneath tall trees and found a small family of deer standing perfectly still, watching me as the filtered light touched their backs and the forest floor.

On this 18x24 acrylic canvas, I used my palette knife to rough in the trunks, undergrowth, and layered leaves, letting the paint stand up from the surface like bark and moss. Within that textured woodland, I placed the doe and her young, their forms more delicately rendered so they emerge gently from the surrounding trees. Their alert poses and soft, watchful eyes create a quiet dialogue between viewer and wildlife, as if you have just stepped into the clearing, too.

Muted greens, russets, and dappled golds echo the feel of an autumn walk in a neighborhood that still holds wild pockets of sanctuary. As light moves across the raised strokes, the forest deepens and shifts, giving the sense that the deer might step away at any moment.

This piece works beautifully in an entryway, a reading nook, or any room where you want to bring in the stillness of the woods.
